Stuff to do in Panajachel and around Lago Atitlan

Commune with the locales.
From the traditional Myans, to the Panajachel business owners, to the farmers, and especially the children, you will find the Guatemalans to be extremely friendly and open. They have great stories to tell, and are very excited to show you what this area has to offer. Take some time to interact with the locals.

Ride around the lake.  Ride up the mountains.
We'll be doing an organized ride around Lago Atitlan on September 7th, distributing food and water to the more remote communities. This is also a great trip to do with a couple of friends. You can take a right turn after crossing the lower bridge and head around to the south. Or you can boat across to the westside of the lake and ride on the other side. You can take a left after the bridge and head straight up to Godinez,  or out of town the other way to Solola. We have maps to show you the way. Always bring plenty of water whenever you go riding.

Head to the markets.
The farmers markets are incredible, with fruit the size of kegs right off the trees. And if you can convince Romolo (our Chief of Guatemalan Operations) , he'll take you to the market's back tents where you can get fresh chicken. I mean really, really fresh chicken. The shuttle services in Panajachel can take you to several markets; there is one in Panajachel and another up the mountain in Solola.

Take Spanish lessons.
This area is famous for its Spanish schools. There are several in Panajachel and around Lago Atitlan. Even one or two classes will help you order food in the restaurants, commune better with the locals, bargain at the markets. The classes are cheap and are generally taught one-on-one. Porno took classes in 2004 when he was here for the Gran Premio de Guatemala, and by the end of the trip, he was taking care of all of the foreign loafers who didn't know any Spanish.

The Pie Lady.
When in Pana, you have to visit the Pie Lady. It is that good. That's all we're saying about the Pie Lady.

Do Nothing.
Sit still and stare at the volcanoes. Wait for them to erupt. It might take a while. Have patience. If you're lucky, they'll explode for you. Might not happen. Worth staring at them anyway.  In the meantime, you can watch the plants grow
